KDS (Kitchen Display System): the kitchen screen
A KDS (Kitchen Display System) is the screen that shows orders in the kitchen in real time, replacing paper tickets and organizing prep by order and priority.
How the KDS works
When an order is placed at the POS, QR menu or delivery, it appears instantly on the kitchen KDS. Each station sees only its items, with a timer per ticket, and marks them ready when done.
- Real-time orders, no paper
- Prep time and prioritization per item
- Fewer errors between front and back of house
KDS vs paper tickets
Paper gets lost, smudges and measures nothing. The KDS logs when each order came in and went out, so you can find bottlenecks and improve ticket times during the rush.
FAQ
Does the KDS replace the kitchen printer?
In most operations, yes. The KDS shows orders on screen; printing becomes optional for specific steps.
Does the KDS need internet?
It runs connected to the ordering system. Cloud solutions sync dining room, delivery and kitchen in real time.
Can I have more than one KDS screen?
Yes. It's common to have one screen per station (grill, fryer, plating), each showing only what it prepares.
